About the Booklets:
The purpose of these booklets is to provide your child with a context for sight words, which are otherwise just abstract words that need to be memorized. They should only be introduced after a child can sound out the five short vowels and all the letters of the alphabet including the digraphs ch, ck, sh, th, wh.

Sequence and Bundles:
To allow more flexibility, you can buy these booklets individually or as a bundle of 10 words. We have combined the sight words in bundles based on their frequency by grade level and also their difficulty. The booklets increase in difficulty as the levels go up.

These booklets include sight words from the Dolch & Fry Word Lists that are a part of the K-2 curriculum.

Please note:
Decodable words that can be sounded out (like “can” or “and”) are NOT included in our sight word booklets.  Encourage your child to sound out and read those words rather than memorize them.

HOW TO USE THE BOOKLETS:

  • If your child has already been introduced to the sight word, have them point to the word in the box and say it out loud (the same sight word appears on the top of every page), and then have them read the sentence aloud one word at a time.
  • If your child has not been introduced to the sight word before, point to the word in the box and say, for example, "This says 'is'."  Have your child also point to the word and repeat it, and then move on to the sentence.
  • After reading the booklet, encourage your child to come up with a sentence or two of their own using that sight word.
  • Each page has a picture that helps your child relate to the word and understand its meaning. Engage your child in a discussion or ask questions about the word and the picture to help them understand the word and also to develop reading comprehension
  • Encourage your child to read each booklet several times. Remember, repeated reading helps build reading fluency. Keep in mind, however, that the goal is to teach your child to actually decode or READ the sentences, not memorize them. So if you feel your child is memorizing the sentences due to repeated reading, it's time to move on to another booklet - but come back to this one again later for review.
  • Since sight words are tricky for many children, come back to the booklet after 4-5 booklets to review the words and sentences.
  • These booklets make excellent first readers once a child can sound out the alphabet. So to develop an interest in reading, print the booklets and leave them around the house so your child can read them independently as well.

WHY "BITE-SIZED" BOOKLETS?
In 2018, we introduced I See, I Spell, I Learn Decodable Readers - Levels A, B & C. These included 25 storybooks and 5 chapter books. We have received a great response to these books and they are currently being used by teachers, tutors and homeschooling moms across the U.S. (Click here to see what they say about these books)

In response to frequent requests made by parents who have spent the summer of Covid with their young children trying to find appropriate reading material, we are excited to introduce our new “Reading Booklets” for kindergarten, 1st grade, 2nd grade and children with dyslexia.

These bite-sized readers are shorter than our Decodable Storybooks, and since they focus on one sight word at a time, they are the perfect choice for your beginning reader.

eBOOKS & DOWNLOADS, so that you can use them again and again!
Instead of creating paperbacks of these bite-sized readers, we decided to make eBooks and downloadable books - which your child can either read on a Kindle or tablet, or as print-outs at home or in the classroom.

Our journey of creating these booklets has just started, and the response we have received from moms and teachers who have used these over this “Covid summer” with their children has been overwhelmingly positive.

A review from a parent in California:
“I cannot thank you enough for these booklets! When school closed for the summer, the only sight word my 6-year old son could recognize was the word “I”. We used your booklets to supplement your picture flashcards and he has mastered every single one! I think the best moment of my entire summer was when I came into his bedroom to tuck him in one night, he was sitting on his bed reading your booklet to himself. My boy was so afraid to read before this. Thank you!”
